July 4th CHROME!!

Fourth of July week is upon us!  Sunny weather, barbeques, family picnics, boating, fireworks…all images that come to mind when many Americans think of our nation’s birthday.  For the Fisheye crew, the fourth means one thing- chromers.  Fourth of July week holds that magic mark for many rivers here in Southwest Alaska when we see consistently outstanding fishing for chrome Kings and strobelight Sockeyes.

We’ve been busy as ever here at the lodge, but both Steve and I have managed to fight and claw our way to the river a few times over the last couple weeks. I had the privilege of guiding two wonderful gentlemen from the U.K. last week, accompanied by another angling companion from Argentina.  All three were dedicated salmon and sea-trout fisherman who enjoy throwing the double-handed rod.  It was the fishing derby of fishing derbies, with multiple doubles, triples, and many laughs had by all.

An evening King on the spey-rod...

This was the first big Alaska test for our new nets, custom-made back in Washington by Darrel at Rimrock Nets.   Up until last week, our two samples stood tall on display in the tackle shop.  It was great to hear all the comments about their sheer beauty and the meticulous craftsmanship required to produce such special pieces of art.  It was even better to conduct our first AK field-test on a Sockeye meat-run!  We beat it up the best we could on over 50 Sockeyes before lunch.  Field-testing was great and the fishing was epic, needless to say we couldn't break the net.

Scott Sadil swings away...

Steve got out to take some pictures a few days back with a wonderful group of four anglers.  Rick Brock and his daughter Devon , accompanied by Darren Woodcock, a soldier in the British Army and Scott Sadil, an accomplished writer for many fly fishing magazines and author of several books.  Their two day fishing adventure started off with a flight to the Togiak River, then on to the Ungalikthluk and our Rainbo Camp.  Once again, fishing was nothing shy of insane.  Rolling coastal tundra, beautiful broken skies, and chrome Kings on the fly…what could possibly be better for taking photos?

And the day begins...

Gearing up in the morning...

The day's first stop...

Corked on a nice King...Scott puts the wood to 'em!

Darren maxes out his 10 wt....

We hope you enjoyed this series of photos.  We'll be posting more again soon after our next big adventure!

Tight Lines,
Nate
